Cities in the world attract more and more people. They are centres for the development of the economy, culture, and science. So, the number of their inhabitants is growing, as well as the tourists they attract, bringing opportunities, as well as threats. The role of tourism in the sustainable development of Metropolitan cities will be the subject of an international conference at the Vistula School of Hospitality with the participation of a Nobel Laureate, Prof. Lučki Kajfež Bogataj. The event will take place on June the 4th-5th, 2020.

Contemporary metropolitan cities – opportunities and threats

The conference: ’Tourism in the sustainable development of Metropolitan cities’, will be a forum for the exchanging of views by scientists from various disciplines, and practitioners from communities involved in creating and monitoring new phenomena in tourism, in the context of development challenges facing the world.

The subjects of discussion will include, in particular, the following issues:

Tourism versus Global trends:

  • Demographic changes and the resulting challenges.
  • Globalisation processes and urbanisation.
  • Cross-cultural contacts.

Tourism versus Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

  • Tourism in a Metropolitan space – tourism and other functions of urban space, tourism, and gentrification, mobility, creating value, and landscape.
  • Tourism as an element of building the Metropolitan identity – image and promotion, heritage and its interpretation.
  • Actions promoting tourism-related responsible consumption and production in Metropolitan areas – the management of resources.
  • Tourism versus the living standards of inhabitants of Metropolitan cities. Search for synergy, conflict resolution.
  • Tourism – an element of the economic growth of Metropolitan cities, entrepreneurship, workplaces, costs and benefits, and their distribution, fighting with poverty.
  • Institutional support of tourism development – co-operation with local authorities, urban activists, and inhabitants. Structures supporting the growth of tourism, tourism as an element of policy, and the actions of city authorities.
  • Modern technologies and innovations facilitating the sustainable development of tourism in Metropolitan cities.
  • Inclusivity of tourism in Metropolitan cities.

Nobel Prize Laureate at Vistula

Eminent experts have agreed to act as key speakers during the conference, including Prof. Lučka Kajfež Bogataj, a climatologist at the University of Ljubljana, former vice-chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which in 2007, was honoured to receive, together with Al Gore, the Nobel Peace Prize, for efforts to build and disseminate knowledge on climate changes caused by human activity.

The IPCC is a permanent forum for co-operation between hundreds of scientists from many countries. It publishes reports that are of great importance in formulating national and international climate programmes and funding policies for climate change research.

Professor Lučka Kajfež Bogataj is the author of over 400 scientific, technical, and academic papers, as well as about 110 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
