Architecture and Urban Studies at Vistula University is a four-year Engineer’s programme which will teach you how to shape your environment and make the space around you more beautiful and functional. All this thanks to practice-oriented classes and interdisciplinary knowledge of architecture, urban studies, and art.
This programme has been made with everyone who wants to have a real influence on urban space in mind. The curriculum of the Architecture and Urban Studies programme has been designed, in collaboration with the Business Centre Club, the National Co-operative Council and Employers of Poland. The majority of the lecturers you will encounter over the course of the four-year programme, are architects and specialists, with long records of meaningful work. This ensures that, every day you will be able to learn from professionals, who will not only share with you knowledge about the latest technical solutions, but who also use these solutions in some of the most advanced architectural and urban projects.

After the 1st and 2nd year, we guarantee three weeks of fieldwork and five weeks of diploma apprenticeship.

Basics of CAD Introduction to basic CAD techniques used in architectural design. Knowledge, understanding and familiarity with main CAD tools. Development of practical skills in order to design and visualise simple projects using appropriate computer software. Basics of Descriptive Geometr Shaping and practicing spatial imagination. Building Designing and material properties Acknoleging the student with the basic principles of technical drawing; recognition and selection of building materials. Teaching the recognition of construction elements and systems. Acquainting with the types, properties and scope of using building materials. Presentation of the principles of architectural and construction design for simple building objects. Getting to know the rules of work in a project team. Polish 1 – level A0 Acquisition of skills at the primary level including real world data with the emphasis on the development of specialized vocabulary and receptive and productive skills in the situations connected to the specific class topics. Freehand drawing and drafting The aim of the course is to show the basic differences between hand- drawn and technical drawings. Acquainting with the sketch and technical drawing workshop at the work of the architect. History of Architecture 1 Knowledge of the history of European architecture: the most important buildings, architects, formal styles and their functions and construction systems; capability of stylistic and comparative analysis; Information Technology Extension of practical abilities of using modern computer tools in winning and distribution of information concerning the general field of education. Acquiring the skills to use basic office software programs. Developing self- learning skills Introduction to Architecture Design Introduction to artistic, technical and social aspects of architecture design, including context, surrounding and the environment. Developing skills of understanding and proper analyzing elements of existing composition. Developing creativity and spatial imagination. Understanding basic stages of the design: analysis, concept, presentation. Introduction to Mathematics - basic course Developing knowledge on the subject of Differential Calculus of One Variable Function. Developing knowledge on subject of Differential Calculus of Several Variable Functions. Developing skills in the calculation of derivatives of the functions of one variable. Developing skills in the calculation of Derivatives of Several Variable Functions. Learning to work according to the schedule. Preparation for working according to established priorities. Introduction to Theories of Architecture The course demonstrates the principles of form, space and order that underlie architectural design. It introduces some of the basic themes and concepts in relation to visual, formal, functional and organizational qualities in architectural design and focuses on their appearance and development in history. The course aims to introduce the vocabulary of architectural creative thought and development of design concepts in their relation to the urban, social and historical context. To provide the student of architecture a foundation in the conception of forms, spatial aspects, compositions and their analysis in buildings. To develop understanding of the basic principles of space and mass, circulation and architectural composition. Architectural Mock-up Workshops The main aim of the module is to practice presentation of abstract concepts in a most synthetic way, using simple forms and materials; developing imagination; practicing composition of elements. CAD – Architectural Visualisation(1) Introduction to basic CAD techniques used in architectural visualisation. Knowledge, understanding and familiarity with main computer tools used for 3d modelling and visualisation. Development of practical skills in order to provide a comprehensive graphic design of a simple projects using properly selected computer software. Building Technologies I Acknoleging the student with the selected types of construction elements. Teaching how to recognize types of structure loads. Teaching the basics of acoustics and hygrothermal properties. Informing about the continuing development of engineering, explaining the need for lifelong learning to improve their professional and personal competences. Teaching the recognition and construction of selected elements of building structures. Acquainting with the types, properties and scope of application of selected materials construction. Communication and argumentation techniques I The aim of this course is to provide students with theoretical tools, experience, and ultimately the confidence they need to present a topic in their field of specialization in a clear, logical, and concise way; additionally, Students will learn various strategies for giving, analyzing, and evaluating presentations; furthermore, students will learn about various arguments types and how to use them effectively; finally, students will learn non-verbal communication skills and voice control. Ecology and Energy Efficient Technologies The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with the changes in the environment as a result of anthropogenic activities and the transformation of the climate, as well as with strategies to preserve the ecological balance in the process of building and maintaining architectural structures in harmony with their environment, with respect to the law regulations. The course covers the environmental issues in relationship with water, soil, air, in the rural and urban settings, as well as an overview of the concept of sustainable development in aspects relevant to architecture and civil engineering. Polish 2 – level A1 Acquisition of skills at the primary level including real world data with the emphasis on the development of specialized vocabulary and receptive and productive skills in the situations connected to the specific class topics. Foundations of Architecture Design Introduction to architectural composition. Preparing students for conscious and responsible shaping of architectural form. Understanding the importance of architecture in shaping cultural environment. Understanding the meaning of architecture theory and its philosophical basis. Understanding outside conditions and their impact on architecture. Freehand Drawing and artistic technics The aim of the course is to learn and implement the basics of technical and hand drawing language. The ability to read and understand a variety of architectural drawings, along with the ability to perform the simplest sketches. History of Architecture 2 Knowledge of the history of European architecture: the most important buildings, architects, formal styles and their functions and construction systems; capability of stylistic and comparative analysis. Structural Mechanics The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge about the relationships between external forces acting on the structure and the effects of these loads, i.e. deformations and internal forces in the construction. Skills in the field of statics and strength of materials. Presenting measuring methods for inventory. Presenting and practising the rules of measuring and qualities of measuring tools. Building Technologies 2 Acquainting with the recognition and construction of elements and systems of construction objects. Acquainting with the types, properties and scope of using building materials. Presentation of the principles of architectural and construction design of underground garages, slipways, and residential buildings. Getting to know the rules of work in a project team. Presentation of practical solutions to issues from range of fire protection of buildings. Advanced techniques of academic writing I Developing writing skills, using different writing methods at an academic level including ‘process writing’. Architecture Design The educational goal is theoretical and practical understanding of the problems of designing space for the family, in particular regarding the formation of the function and form, including: the context of the place, scale and character of architecture, the impact of family features on shaping the home space, ergonomic solution of home zones (rest and family contacts, dining, hygiene), new trends in shaping buildings, current requirements for shaping buildings, lighting, sun disposition and functional issues, new trends in the field of installation, construction, technology, communication. CAD - Architectural Visualisation (2) Introduction to advanced CAD techniques used for architectural visualizations. Knowledge and understanding of the main computer tools used for 3D modelling and visualization. Developing practical skills to provide a comprehensive graphic design of complex projects using appropriately selected computer software. Enrepreneurship. Architect's business environment The aim of the course is to understand the essence of entrepreneurship and the relationship between entrepreneurship, innovation and technologies. The aim of the course is also cooperative work on the concept of the venture, which will lead to economic success on the professional architecture work market. Freehand Drawing and Artistic Techniques 2 Getting knowledge about spatial work in architecture. Acquiring knowledge about the interior design illustration and the conceptual multi- thematic sketch. Acquiring skills in sketching. History of Polish Architecture The subject aims at making students familiar with historical architecture in Poland, till 1939 put on the background of cultural and social changes in Europe of that time. The aim of the subject is broadening the knowledge about the roots of contemporary trends, styles and features of architecture and urban planning and understanding cultural context of architecture. Landscape Architecture Design The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with basic notions of the field of the landscape architecture, as well as the ability to make an analysis of the selected landscape design with respect to function, context and form. Plumbing and HVAC infrastructure Acquiring knowledge about the construction, principles of operation, implementation and operation of selected sanitary installations used in residential buildings. Acquiring the ability to design simple installation systems in accordance with applicable laws, Polish standards and other guidelines in this area. Acquiring the ability to use a selected computer program to support the design of sanitary installations. Structural Design 1 The aim of the course is to present to students the basic principles of physics, which are governed by statically determinate structures. As part of the classes, the basic types of supports and reactions are presented. In addition, students learn to calculate reactions and draw diagrams of cross-sectional forces for statically determinate structures. In addition, students are familiarized with the principles of modelling structures in specialist programs. Architecture Design 2 The educational goal is theoretical and practical understanding of the problems of designing multi- family buildings, in particular regarding the shape of the functional and spatial layout and form, including: the context of the place, scale and nature of architecture, new trends in building development, current requirements for shaping buildings, lighting, insolation and functional issues, new trends in the field of installation, construction, technology, communication service issues. Basics of Urban Composition The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the processes and stages of the development of world’s civilizations and their impact on the formation of certain archetypes of form and ways of shaping space in architecture and art. Students will gain knowledge about the creative achievements at different stages of development from nomadism and the period of early settlements, through the development of large States in Antiquity, in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, in the Industrial Era until present in different places of the world. Course participants will have the ability to distinguish between the specific characteristics of art and architecture developed in cultural centers of Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and the impact of these distant civilizations on the architecture and the art of Europe and North America. Students will become more open to the world and integrated with groups of foreign students studying in AFiB Vistula. BIM design Getting the skills to use BIM software. Introduction to the problems of integrated design and changes that are taking place today in the architect's workshop. Building Technologies 3 Acquainting students with the work of an architect: preparation of technical documentation for a single- family house: drawing and descriptive. Teaching principles of architectural and construction design for simple building objects. Getting to know principles of organizing the investment process. Familiarization with the design of the ventilation system, types of window and door carpentry. Engineering Training - Construction Site The aim of the subject is to make students familiar with the problems and nature of work on the construction site. Getting to know in practice the specifics of individual stages of the building's construction, urban and landscape assumptions, etc. Getting to know the cooperation between architects and builders in practice. Freehand Drawing and Artistic Techniques (3) -painting The main task of the course is to acquire knowledge related to color. Getting to know basic colors, derivatives and their mutual relations. Three basic painting techniques, tools and methods of their use. Practicing the basic skills of a painter. History of Art and Civilization The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the processes and stages of the development of world’s civilizations and their impact on the formation of certain archetypes of form and ways of shaping space in architecture and art. History of city planning The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the history of the development of settlements and the construction of cities ranging from the Neolithic period to the 21st century. Students master the knowledge of this topic, as well as acquire skills determining the principles and characteristics of the formation of settlement and urban tissue in different scientific and cultural conditions. As a result, students gain theoretical basis for the practical skills in urban planning. Social competences: a sense of responsibility for design decisions and their impact on the conditions and life quality of residents of cities and settlements. Architecture Design 3 Building Technologies 4 Familiarizing the student with the work of the architect: preparation and development of proprietary architectural detail solutions. Teaching the principles of drawing detailed scale drawings. Acquainting with the rules of designing curtain walls, glazed roofs, skylights and roof hatchways. Preparing students for independent work of the architect: independent execution of given design details on the basis of student architectural projects from previous semesters. Preparing students to work in a team - preparing and preparing presentations for topics related to shaping architectural detail. Contemporary Architecture 1 The main objective of the course is to present a review of the main directions of development of contemporary architecture (20th and 21st century) on the background of global civilization and environmental, social and cultural transformations. Ergonomics The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the principles of ergonomics, help understanding the construction law and principles of architectural design,by presenting the reasons and sources of its records, based on ergonomics. The goal is also to make students aware of the consequences of bad design decisions in the context of avaiding the principles of ergonomics. Physics of Building Engineering Introduction to the physical properties of building materials and physical phenomena occurring in building partitions and entire buildings with an emphasis on the penetration of heat and moisture. Development of practical skills in designing appropriate material solutions for the building envelope in order to meet legal regulations and obtain safe, human and environmentally friendly conditions. Architecture Design 4 – spec. 1, 2 The educational aim is the theoretical knowledge and practical application of the principles of designing a public building in connection with the surrounding buildings, the natural and social environment. Students learn about the typology of forms of objects with public functions, principles of harmony of medium-scale public utility architecture that developed in the 21st century. Students will possess the ability to analyze the area for the planned complex on an urban and architectural scale and create a spatial form of a building based on a functional and rational scheme as well as construction system that harmoniously fits into the surroundings. Contemporary Architecture 2 The main objective of the course is to present a review of the main directions of development of contemporary architecture (20th and 21st century) on the background of global civilization and environmental, social and cultural transformations. Structural design 3 The aim of the subject is to provide basic information in the field of statics and strength of materials. Students are familiarized with the principles of modelling structures in specialist programs. Urban Design Expanding knowledge and skills in the field of urban theory and practice. The ability to create a multifunctional urban complex on an urban scale, taking into account complex conditions and functional and spatial connections. Educating the participants (students) of design classes the ability to actively and creatively receive the surrounding urban space. Urban Planning 1 – spec.2 Expanding knowledge and skills in the field of urban theory and practice. The ability to create a multifunctional urban complex on an urban scale, taking into account complex conditions and functional and spatial connections. Educating the participants (students) of design classes the ability to actively and creatively receive the surrounding urban space. Economics and Organization of Investment Process The aim of the course is to provide students with basic principles related to cost estimation, starting from the Polish law, through the literature of the subject to the good practices and principles of preparing relevant documents. Students will learn the types of cost estimates and practical tips on how the cost estimate should be used. In addition, they will become familiar with the types of contracts for construction works and with practical recommendations when it is more favorable. Interior Design and Arragements I Awareness of the essence of interior design. Mastering the skills of transforming interiors depending on the functional needs of space with particular emphasis on visual and aesthetic compositional solutions. Developing creativity in the search for the individual character of the interior, creating a planned atmosphere in relation to the specific functional needs of the facility, as well as taking into account the somatic and psychological characteristics of the user. Proseminar The aim of the course is the analysis of the theoretical and practical problems related to scientific writing in conjunction with the thesis engineering project; acquainting the student with formal requirements mostly regarding the written phase of engineering thesis. Ecology and Energy Efficient Technologies- advanced level The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with the changes in the environment as a result of anthropogenic activities and the transformation of the climate, as well as with strategies to preserve the ecological balance in the process of building and maintaining architectural structures with their environment. Interior Design and Arragements II Developing creativity in the search for the individual character of the interior, creating a planned atmosphere in relation to the specific functional needs of the object, which is the subject of engineering work.
