    PREREQUISITES

    If you want to apply for the BA programme in Graphic Design, you must meet the following requirements:

    • have the secondary school-leaving certificate (matriculation certificate);
    • present a portfolio of works confirming your basic artistic competency;
    • receive a positive opinion of the qualifying committee based on the review of the submitted portfolio of works.

  • The Bachelor’s degree programme in the field of Graphic Design has been specially tailored to account for the widest possible variety of means of expression used in graphic design and to meet the demand for graphic works among the contemporary recipients. The programme defines professional goals and prepares students for such professions as: graphic designer, DTP computer graphic designer, multimedia computer graphic designer, illustrator, animator, and photographer.

    Students can choose subjects within two specialties:

    • artistic graphics;
    • interdisciplinary graphics.

    The study programme in the field of Graphic Design takes into account specific aspects of the use of art and design that meet the needs of the labour market. At the same time, the course goals and the entire programme put a heavy emphasis on artistic values. Freedom of expression and individual approach to each student are the key factors making Graphic Design at Vistula University an extremely creative and inspiring field.

    INTERNSHIPS

    The Bachelor’s degree programme in the field of Graphic Design comprises three-months’ internships and two-weeks’ outdoor drawing and painting workshops.

    SEMESTER I
    Basics of artistic activities Expanding knowledge and skills in the field of plastic theory as well as visual and perceptual language of art; formulation of artistic and aesthetic judgments; the ability to see the relationship between theoretical knowledge and practical cognition.
    Basics of history and theory of art Introduction to the history of art and familiarization with the nomenclature and technologies related to painting, graphics, sculpture, architecture and artistic craft.
    Basic of artistic graphic The student learns the basics of graphic design, implements a graphic design based on drawing techniques, learns the methods of matrix implementation in convex printing technology, acquires knowledge and the ability to prepare a matrix for printing, handling and independent printing on a cylindrical press.
    Basic of photography The student learns the rules of handling photographic equipment and the basics of photography, uses the acquired knowledge in practical activities. In a study environment, he learns the specificity and technical, substantive and artistic requirements of commercial tasks carried out on the design market.
    Basic of graphic design The student learns the basic tools and rules of graphics designers workplace and the basics of graphic applications from the Adobe collection: Illustrator, Photoshop, In Design.
    Introduction to multimedia The student learns about issues related to multimedia, 2D, 3D, 4D publications (compression, types of digital images, sound processing). The student gets acquainted with the process of creating printed publications, he learns in Adobe In Design the implementation of preparation for printing printed publications and interactive publications.
    History of Graphic The student learns the history of European graphics including regional schools, he learns professional terminology in the field of graphic techniques.
    Basic of drawing Exercises in composing a drawing on B1, B2 formats, learning to draw with a line and chiaroscuro. Study of the shape of the object, proportions, observation of the human body, drawing live model, and still life, color in drawing.
    Techniques of convex printing: linocut, color linocut Learning the technique of convex printing and the implementation of a graphic design based on drawing techniques. Methods of realizing the matrix in the technique of convex printing (point linerite, planar, colored). Preparation of the matrix for printing and self-made printout of the work on a cylindrical press.
    Protection of intellectual property The student gets knowledge about regulation and principles of the law on the protection of intellectual property. He learns to interpret basic intellectual property rights and apply copyright in practice.
    Basics of digital graphics The student learns the principles of creating and using digital graphics in professional applications (art, advertising, graphic design), perfects the acquired knowledge in practical activities, performs tasks.
    Foreign language -1 Acquisition of communication skills at intermediate level (B1 +), taking into account authentic data. The main focus is on developing specialist vocabulary and developing reception and production skills in situations defined by the subject of particular classes.
    Sport and recreation Improving physical fitness. Shaping the habit of physical activity. Promoting an active and healthy lifestyle and pro-health attitudes. Students' interest in physical culture.
    SEMESTER II
    History of art - 1 The student learns about issues related to painting, sculpture and artistic craftsmanship created in the period from Paleolith through the Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages, for understanding the content and artistic value of art, it is necessary to learn the various non-artistic factors that have influenced the shaping of plastic art throughout history.
    Techniques of communication and argumentation The student learns how to present his own convictions and views in his statements. He learns how to counter arguments, how to defend his arguments, how to modify his views under the influence of the convincing arguments of the opposing party.
    Illustration -1 Knowledge about ancient and contemporary illustration, the student develops an individual language of artistic expression through the implementation of tasks on the topic. The student acquires the ability to shape the message through illustration, without using text, the student acquires the ability to creatively visualize the text.
    Drawing -1 Deepening the skills acquired in the first semester in the field of: a study of the human figure, study of the shape of the object, observation of the human body, using a color in a drawing, development of individual student's creative predispositions.
    Painting -1 Exercises in composing a painting image in B1, B2 format, learning to paint with water paints, study of the shape of the object: proportions, axonometry made with a brush, observation of human body color - working with the model, still life, painting sketches as compositional exercises, development of individual student's creative predispositions.
    Serigraphy Creating matrices according to your own design, learning to transfer the idea of ​​a design to a serigraphic matrix, making prints using a serigraphy technique on a paper base, on a cardboard, or on fabric.
    Typography - 1 The student is familiarized with the issues of: writing typefaces, composition rules (breaking) text, learning the basics of Adobe InDesign, using the skills of using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, uses the knowledge of the basics of graphic design.
    Graphic design -1 Students learn the basics of creating ideograms and improve their ability to use the acquired knowledge in practical activities, learn about the specific and technical, substantive and artistic requirements of commercial tasks carried out on the design market.
    Designing visual communication and advertising The relationship between real space and the image of space created in terms of content and form. Analysis of a selected information system in a selected spatial structure - urban and architectural. Space organization as a visual setting with the use of concepts, ideas, thoughts, issues in advertising and in public relations.
    Editing and processing of a digital image The student learns the basic theories and aesthetic assumptions of photography, performs practical exercises. In the study environment, he learns the specificity and technical, substantive and artistic requirements of commercial or individual tasks carried out in photography.
    Video creation - 1 The student learns Adobe Premiere - an application for editing video files. He carries out artistic tasks - author's short films. He learns how to use the medium to express the content of the task.
    Gravure printing techniques - dry needle, mezzotint, copper engraving Learning graphic techniques of gravure printing (dry needle, mezzotint, copper engraving), implementation of a graphic design based on drawing techniques, methods of matrix implementation in intaglio gravure techniques, preparation of a matrix for printing work on a cylindrical press.
    Gravure printing techniques - etching, aquatint Learning graphical techniques of gravure printing (etching, aquatint), implementation of a graphic design based on drawing techniques, methods of matrix implementation in intaglio gravure techniques, preparation of matrix and printing work on a cylindrical press.
    Multimedia - 1 The student learns Adobe Photoshop - a graphic application for creating and editing bitmap images for multimedia publications. The student learns about Adobe Illustrator - a graphics application for creating and editing vector graphics. The student learns to combine vector graphics with bitmap images, used in advertisements, posters, animations, films, printed publications, e-books, and other multimedia publications.
    Outdoor drawing-painting 1 Education of visual consciousness, through painting and drawing work outdoors, inspiration in nature.
    Foreign language -2 Acquisition of communication skills at intermediate level (B2), taking into account authentic data. The main emphasis will be on expanding specialized vocabulary and developing reception and production skills in situations defined by the subject of particular classes.

    SEMESTER III
    History of art-2 The student learns about European and Polish art from the Renaissance and Baroque period.
    Illustration-2 The student learns about contemporary and historical illustration, perfects his own language of artistic expression through the implementation of tasks on the subject, creates a message through illustration, creatively visualizes the content contained in the text.
    Drawing -2 Learning to draw a human figure with particular emphasis on the character of the model, building perspective shortcuts, graphic arrangement of the background, deepening observational and creative skills in the visual message, learning new drawing techniques.
    Painting -2 Exercises in composing a painting; in B1, B2 format, deepening studies of human figure (color of human body), water color painting, study of the shape of the object, looking for proportions, still life sketches as a composition exercise, observation of individual student's creative predispositions.
    Alternative graphic techniques Learning to work with large-format negatives, their use to make positives on hand-prepared photosensitive papers in alternative techniques, preparation and application of photosensitive emulsion, learning how to use vacuum copying.
    Typography - 2 The student performs practical tasks using typographic graphic elements, uses the knowledge of typography rules in graphic design.
    Graphic design -2 The student improves the skills in the use of graphics in advertising and marketing, learns technical and artistic requirements of commercial tasks carried out on the design market.
    Theory and estethic of photography Getting acquainted with advertising photography, photo editing, image processing, learning to use photo tools and photographic expression to achieve specific visual effects, use of photography in practice, group tasks prepare students for work in teams, teaches cooperation and responsibility for the tasks entrusted.
    Video creation -2 The student works in Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, learns how to use effects, creates video projects using vector graphics, bitmap, film, animation and sound.
    Flat print– Litography Learning principles of graphic technique (flat printing), preparation of lithographic stone, printing on a lithographic press.
    Gravure printing techniques: etching, aquatint Students will learn the rules of graphic techniques that belong to gravure printing (etching, aquatint) and will independently realize a graphic design based on drawing techniques,prepare the matrix, prepare for printing and print their own work on a cylindrical press.
    Animation - 1 The student learns basic rules of animation. He can make short animated forms in programs from Adobe (Animate, After Effects). He can use narrative techniques by means of motion in time. The student learns the history of animated film - both traditional and computer animation.

    SEMESTER IV In IV semester students choose subjects – first step of specialisation
    Algraphy Methods and techniques of flat printing - algraphy, alternative to the previously known method on lithographic stone (matrix of aluminum sheet). Preparation of a drawing project (directly with a lithographic pencil on a sheet, or on a tablet), processing of files (drawings, photos) in computer graphic programs. Preparation of a sheet with a drawing or coated with a photosensitive emulsion as a matrix for flat printing. Learning how to properly apply a polygraph paint roller to an aluminum matrix.     Animation - 2 Student learns how to use various animation techniques - stop-motion animation, tweening, rotoscoping, virtual cameras and 3D layers, learns possibilities offered by the After Effects and Animate programs (effects and other technical solutions). He knows the basics of filming and editing, learns how to render a movie for the needs of various media - cinema, television, internet. He knows the history of animated film - traditional and computer.
    Drawing - 3 Learning to draw a human figure with particular emphasis on the character of the model, building perspective shortcuts, graphic arrangement of the background, deepening observational and creative skills in the visual message, learning new drawing techniques, drawing from imagination using alternative techniques.
    Outdoor drawing-painting-2 Education of visual consciousness, through painting and drawing work outdoors, inspiration in nature.
    Project of artistic book Learning the principles of designing and preparing for printing artistic literary publishing, improving the ability to use technical and artistic means related to the design and processing of the image (photography, graphics digital, artistic graphics), improving the skills of working in project teams.
    Graphic design of event Improvement of the ability to use artistic and technical means to design advertising activities related to the proper presentation of products to potential buyers, learning about various forms of advertising: external, publishing, exhibition, Internet, understanding the principles of creating visual identification and communication systems, improvement of the ability to use technical and artistic means related to image processing.
    Public edition project Learning the rules of visual editing of press publications, understanding the principles of designing, illustrating and preparing press publications for printing, improving the ability to use technical and artistic means related to the design and processing of illustrations and photographs for the needs of the press.
    Artistic poster, Occassional poster Understanding the rules of the modern language of visual communication.Mastering the basic principles of imaging in the field of the concept of a poster.Perfecting synthetic and precise thinking with color, image and word.Building and developing your own artistic personality.
    Storyboards The student learns how to conduct a basic visual narrative using a storyboard. He can transfer drawings from a storyboard to animation, The student is able to lead an advanced visual narrative using a storyboard. He is able to use methods of film narrative in shaping the dynamics of the story.
    Author`s portfolio Learning the technical specifics and substantive and artistic aspects of the commercial implementation of the contemporary design market. Improving the ability to put into practice the known artistic and technical means to achieve specific artistic and marketing goals. Understanding the principles of creating effective self-presentation in a technical aspect. Preparation for a public display of one's own work and related views and artistic theories.
    Illustration – professional project The student receives an outline of knowledge about contemporary and historical illustration. The student develops an individual language of artistic expression through the implementation of tasks on the choosen topic. The student acquires the ability to shape the message by using means of expression without the use of text. The student acquires the ability to creatively visualize the text.
    Artistic graphic – professional project The aim of the subject is to create a series of works by the student based on the known graphic techniques. The use of traditional graphic techniques for printing on paper, as well as on non-standard substrates such as plexiglass, glass, wood, fabric. An example of such realizations can be prints on T-shirts, bags, fabrics used to upholstery furniture, etc. Student builds unique graphic objects that can be used.
    Drawing & painting – professional project Development of the creative expression of the student, directing the artistic taste and artistic interests observed in the previous education process. Student's personality development. Learning to use the means of expressive expression. Learning to paint with opaque paints. Image construction - contrasting colors, keeping eyes, dominating the form. The importance of colors in psychology.
    Applied graphic – professional project Students learn the principles of graphic technique - monotype and other one-digit methods of implementation. In the graphic workshop, they learn the specificity of the monotype and learn the basics of graphic art in this field. Their task will be to master and use new skills to create original artistic works.
    Multimedia – professional project Realization of own project based on messages learned during the studies in both multimedia subjects and other subjects. Demonstrating professionalism of activities related to the implementation of the project.
    Creative design in graphics and photography – professional project Improving the skills in the field of traditional and modern graphic visualization techniques with particular emphasis on the correlation of graphic design and photography in relation to professional market challenges. Understanding the rules of the modern language of visual communication. Improving synthetic and precise thinking with an image. Recognition and development of imagination and artistic personalities of students shaped through creative discussions related to presentations of selected works of art and practicing the skills of observation and quotation with a pencil, brush or photographic camera.
    Graphic design – professional project Improving individual skills in solving complex design tasks and formulating multi-faceted visual messages. Improving the use of the means of graphic expression in order to adapt the obtained results to the requirements of the target audience, understanding the principles of creating complex visual information systems, understanding the technical and economic conditions of multi-faceted design.
    Experimental graphic – professional project Acquiring by the student the ability to create hand-made flexographic photopolymer matrices with his own design, gaining manual skills in the use of flexographic tools, in transferring his own design to the form of a flexographic photopolymer matrix, Performing printouts by the flexographic technique on a paper base, and on fabric and on plastic.
    V SEMESTER in V Semester the student pursues program of chosen specialisations

    History of art -3 The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge in the field of European art of the twentieth and twenty-first century.
    History of contemporary art The student gets acquainted with important phenomena from the history of art of the 21st century as well as with the works of contemporary Polish and world artists.
    Brand creation The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and skills on the creation of a new brand, the image of the company and brand in traditional media, and identification.

    Laboratory of artistic graphic - specialisation project The student performs artistic graphic works in a chosen technique, based on the knowledge he gained in previous years of studies, as well as performs cycles of graphic works combining graphic techniques, uses the effects of individual techniques, creates works on a high, professional artistic level.
    Drawing and painting laboratory - specialisation project Student freely expresses himself in drawing and painting techniques on a chosen topic, creates individual works or cycles of works, he can build them into complex visualization projects implemented in other techniques, enriching digital techniques with an individual expression of a personal drawing or painting work.
    Laboratory applied graphic - specialisation project The student learns how to use graphic techniques used in artistic graphics for utility purposes, such as prints on functional items made of various materials, he learns how artistic graphics can enrich artistic qualities of utilitarian objects.
    Illustrative graphic The student learns how to combine the message expressed with a word and message contained in the image so that they form one cohesive whole, composed in an interesting way that meets the high aesthetic expectations of the contemporary recipient.
    Artistic graphic – experimental workshop The student works on complex graphic project, learns how to experiment with known techniques, how to combine the means of expression in graphic techniques, how to creatively use the results of experiments and unexpected events in the creative process.
    Specialisation – interdisciplinary graphic
    Laboratory of multuimedia – specialisation project The student realizes the project using selected means of expression from a wide range of multimedia techniques learned. The aim of the project is to use a high degree of sophistication in the ability to choose and use the means that ensures the current state of development of digital technology.
    Laboratory of creative photography – specialisation project The student learns to use photography as part of the communication language, learns how to make and how to choose photos for the purpose of a given message, how to creatively work with photography, taking into account the current trends in the field of photo editing – continuation from previous semester.
    Laboratory of design – specialisation project The student implements graphic designs corresponding to the needs of the modern market, learns how to present the offer of graphic works in response to inquiries from customers, learns how to convince the recipient to artistic decisions taken in order to maintain the project at a high artistic level – continuation from previous semester.
    Laboratory of experimental graphics - specialisation project The student learns how to experiment with known flexographic techniques, how to combine the means of expression in graphic techniques, how to creatively use the results of experiments and unexpected events in the creative process – continuation from previous semester.
    Multimedia project Implementation of a multimedia project based on the knowledge of multimedia techniques as well as using the possibilities of various ways of expressing and communicating content offered by the Internet, familiarizing with current trends in web applications.
    Artistic experimental project The student works on complex graphic project, learns how to experiment with known techniques, how to combine the means of expression in graphic techniques, how to creatively use the results of experiments and unexpected events in the creative process – continuation from previous semester.

  • The field of Graphic Design (Bachelor’s degree programme) offers two specialties:

    • artistic graphics;
    • interdisciplinary graphics.

     

    SPECIALTY: ARTISTIC GRAPHICS
    This specialty will help you become an independent graphic artist. It will provide you with a solid foundation in terms of drawing, painting and illustration. You will master at least 10 graphic techniques: linocut, coloured linocut, dry point, mezzotint, copperplate, etching, aquatint, lithography, serigraphy and algraphy. You will learn to use selected media and tools to achieve a specific goal. You will be ready to start your own creative work.

     

    SPECIALTY: INTERDISCIPLINARY GRAPHICS
    This specialty will allow you to develop computer graphic designer’s skills. You will learn Adobe CC programmes: Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, Premiere Pro, After Effect, Animate Pro. You will find out how to work in various techniques, make animated films or how to create a project combining image and text. You will get familiar with digital photo and film processing techniques.

    PhD in the Faculty of Painting, Warsaw Academy of Art. Painter, photographer, applied graphic designer. He cooperates with galleries, publishing houses and advertising agencies as a photographer and designer.

    Jolanta Johnsson

    Jolanta Gołembiowska-Johnsson, PhD

    She has a diploma at the Graphics faculty of ASP Warsaw (1989); she works in the field of painting, graphics, drawing; she shows her works at individual exhibitions in Poland and abroad, she took part in numerous group exhibitions, she cooperates with Polish and foreign publishers in the field of cover design and book layout, publishing advertising and other printed and digital publications; she collaborated with the correspondent of Finnish public television YLE in the field of filming and editing video image.

    Robert Radziejewski, MA

    Master of Art since 1997. University studies in the Faculty of Graphics of the European Academy of Arts in the years 1992-1997 (among others, with Prof. Julian Pałka, Franciszek Starowieyski, Jerzy Grabowski) completed with a diploma  with an honourable mention in the workshop of Prof. Julian Pałka. Since 1997, participant in exhibitions of photography, drawing and painting. Till 1999, graphic designer in the Helvetica and Marquard Media Publishing House. Since 1999, artistic director in Marquard Media Publishing House. In 2002, he received an honourable mention for the cover of the year in the Grand Front Competition organized by the Chamber of Press Publishers. Since 2008, in the jury of the prestigious Grand Front Competition. In the years 2002-2007, lecturer in his own educational programme for graphic design for publishing purposes (practical aspects of the work of the graphic designer, graphic design studio director and artistic director, application of Desctop Publishing, photo-edition and copyright law) in the Faculty of Graphic Design EAS. Since 2015, lecturer at the Academy of Finance and Business Vistula in the field of graphic design (graphic design, graphic design for the publishing industry, drawing and painting as well as own subject ‘Principles of Artwork’). Since 2016, assistant to Professor Rosław Szaybo, co-creating a proprietory formula of lectures given together. Since 2018, in chargé of the workshop in creative graphic and photographic design as well as workshop in occasional and artistic poster as well as workshop in brand creation.

    BENEFITS OF STUDYING GRAPHIC DESIGN

    Designing graphics
    You will learn how to edit and prepare for print graphical materials, using various techniques. Your imagination, artistic knowledge, and good technical skills will be invaluable here.

    Desktop publishing
    You will learn how to prepare and process graphical materials into digital form and prepare them for printing. All this, using specialised computer software and peripherals.

    Multimedia training
    You will learn how to design and prepare graphical elements used in multimedia projects. You will gain the knowledge necessary to compile multimedia projects, and successfully carry them out.

    Professional photography
    You will put to use your knowledge, skills, photographic equipment, and specialised software to create all kinds of photographs, e.g. documentary, advertising, or purely artistic.

    Professional illustrations
    You will learn how to apply your artistic knowledge, workshop skills, and knowledge of graphic design software. You will be able to independently create professional illustrations, which constitute an interpretation, or complement the verbal message included in the publication.
